  1. My first real "job" was filing invoices at Gulf Coast Jewelry for 50 cents an hour after school in the 50s.

  2. Sara Haase Downtown Dauphin... complete with grates in the sidewalk that always caught my mom's high heels! LOL

My grandma and me use to take the bus downtown off of Springhill Ave. to Gayfer's and Kresses for custard pie at their "soda fountain".

I used to be scared of those grates on Dauphin St. when I was little and my mother and I would "go to town."

I have a vivid memory of walking under a wrought iron balcony on Dauphin Street in my newly purchased cowgirl boots!

It was a real treat to go "window shopping" on Dauphin Street with my Mom. I knew we would eat at the counter at Kress's and I would have a limeade with my plate lunch. Afterwards we would go down to the peanut shop, I can still smell the roasted peanuts. Most times I came home with something special from Gayfer's, The Vanity, The Three Sisters, Lerner's, Harry's, Metzger's or any number of wonderful department stores that lined Dauphin Street. I remember shopping at Zoghaby's for material that Mom would turn into a costume or special prom dress. Herman's Army/Navy store was where my parents purchased a Navy P coat because "all the other girls had one" and I also had to have one. Memories of spending the day downtown on Dauphin Street are wonderful.

Leverne, I remember having a bag for every pair of shoes and the gloves as well...was a sweet time! and Jamie...My Mom was afraid of those grates (probably the heel cathcing problem), and we avoided them. I am afraid to admit that to this day I find them a little scary and still avoid them!

Not only shoes and gloves, your purse had to match and hats were a vital part of the wardrobe and spike heels were an accident in the making if you made a wrong step on one of those grates.

I believe there is (or was) a law prohibiting the wearing of high heels in downtown Mobile. Has anyone else heard of this?
