Dixon on Disc - 1960

Dixon on Disc....Coburn Godwin is the director...back to the camera. I think the photo was made in 1960. One of his first jobs when he came to Mobile from Lucedale with 35 cents in his pocket.

I remember Dixon on Disc -- kind of like American Bandstand Mobile style. My friends and I would go to Channel 10 (?)and dance on Friday afternoons. It was great!!!

This picture was actually when I first started there as a floorman. I later became the producer and director of the show. Wow what some memories. Patricia, if I recall correctly the show was on Saturday morning. It might have been Friday afternoon at one time I can't remember.

I guess in the earlier days of the show it was on Fridays ,LIVE!!!! We would race home from school, change our uniforms and dash down to the studio by 4:00 pm. We all lived downtown and went to school downtown. Such fun!! It must have been taped at one time because I can remember watching the show and seeing everyone.

Coburn Godwin Yes it was a fun time. I have always said; I wish I could direct a line dance show today. I'm surprised some station has not done this in Mobile.

  7. I took ballroom dance from Ted & Lorena Reith and they would pair up the students and put them on Dixon on Disc. I remember dancing a fox trot with a boy with the last name of Hanlin on the show. I planned all week what I was going to wear and how my hair would be done. To me it was as good as American Bandstand and just as exciting. I believe a young man by the name of Tommy Howell was a regular on the show. John Dixon was the perfect host.

    1. My sister also took dancing from the Reith's. I remember Tommy Howell, he always danced with Betty Sue Sessions. Such great memories, such good times!

  12. My mother used to dance on Dixon on Disc and another show with Lorena Reed (Reith?) every weekend in Pensacola and Mobile.

I have been trying for years to find pictures, footage or any other information on these shows and came across this blog this morning!!

We are having a surprise 50th wedding anniversary for my mother and father at Thanksgiving this year and I would love to add some photos from this time period to my slide show that I am putting together.

I would also like to get some information on any upcoming reunions so that maybe they could attend-I know my mother would love it!

My mother is Elaine Killam (Walker) and she still loves to dance though she is not as nimble on her feet since breaking her back several years ago...she fell on her butt during her niece's wedding reception--guess how?! Dancing to "Mustang Sally"!!

Please contact me at either mwalker@fayettecountyga.gov or at ocran1964@yahoo.com with any information--it would be a very unexpected and exciting addition to our presentation!

    Thank you,
    Michelle Walker

    1. Hi, I am doing research for the time period of July through September, 1960. My StepSon was conceived approximately August 1960 as his Mother was a paid dancer at this Dixon on the Disc. We are desparately trying to find his biological Father. My stepson sings and has a deep voice; his Mother's Family has no history of singers or for that matter could carry a tune.....we know that is where she got pregnant but we have to find possibles on our own as you know how secretive it was back then. He is white, but possible Italian. Please reply to dezertwoman@hotmail.com We want to find his bio Dad.

    2. dezertwoman@hotmail.com is Molly M. Hastin, Durkin, Heay, Garn, Vogt, Johnson, Hoskins, Delano, Hermstad, Bradley, Denton, Toms, Moore, and who knows how many other names she has used but the above are just a few of her married names so if she is looking for you keep your distance and for God's sake don't marry this woman, it will end in divorce and cost you plenty. She is a manipulator and liar steer clear. Feel free to email her and tell her of your disgust for how many times she has been married.

I remember going to WALA Channel 10 and dancing live on TV at "Dixon on Disc". I was still to young to drive and would have had no car anyway, but a couple of my slightly older good friends would let me ride with them. Fun memories.

  15. Hi. My name is Frank LaPoint. I danced on the Dixon on Disc Show in1959-60. As I remember, we danced on Friday at the studio, then on Saturday Dixon hosted sock hops at various National Guard Armorys. I remember feeling proud to be a dancer on the show and
especially liked the sock hops as I could really "cut loose."

  19. I met my first love at Dixon on Disc.in 1959. His name was Alex Bush. I recently found out that Alex passed away at only 26 years of age. So sad to me. I loved going downtown on Saturdays to dance on the show but wasn't really allowed to go. Just sneaked around and went anyway. Would love to find relatives of Alex or friends who remember him. I knew Tommy Howell, Ollie Adams, Bobby Adams, Rosemary Adams, Ray Green, Sugar, and others.A wonderful time to remember.

  32. I went the 12 whole years of school and graduated in 1960 from Satsuma High School. Remember the good times some of my classmates and I would have during around 1957 through 1960 driving to Mobile and going into WALA-TV so we could dance on "Dixon on Disc" while my parents would be watching us at home on TV. Nothing like those wonderful school years, being in our high school band and marching through downtown Mobile at Mardi Gras time. Remember being in the band and marching downtown Mobile with Phillip Badillo, Billy Fowler, Mike Jamieson and so many others that I can't remember their names. Awesome friends, and people were so loving and caring back then. I remember Betty Sue Sessions from our school as she was the main dancer on Dixon on Disc. There was never a more wonderful time of life as the years I grew up in Satsuma and went 12 years to that great school. I'll always be very thankful to Jesus Christ for His many blessings in my life! One of those blessings was about 5 years ago when Doris Nell Hutcherson (Horton) and I kept in touch via the Internet and phone calls, and she and her husband drove all the way from South Carolina where they lived to Kalispell, Montana where they came to see Glacier National Park and this beautiful Flathead Valley. I jumped out of my car and ran to hug her and it felt like we had never left Satsuma years ago. What an awesome unexpected reunion for that few days she and her husband Dexter Horton were here seeing the sights. Hated to see them leave, but they have kept in touch with me ever since then, and I believe they moved to North Carolina to be near their 2 married daughters and grandkids.
So thankful for my precious parents too that I love and miss every day of my 79 years. I Love and miss all of you my former classmates, and look forward to seeing you again when Jesus Christ returns. If anyone wants to contact me, here is my information: Juanita Arlene (Morris) DeVito, Kalispell, MT. 59901, 15 miles from Glacier National Park in Northwest Montana. My only child, Daphne Annette Lisenby and I live together as we're the only ones left in our immediate family. She's married and her husband, Shane Trenary also lives with us. My home phone number is listed: 406-752-2250, or email: eyechecker@gmail.com. I also keep in touch with Carolyn Sue (Williams)Cain, whom I believe still lives at Tillman's Corner in Mobile, a former younger Satsuma school mate. May the Lord God bless and keep all of you! With love and fondest memories, Arlene 1/8/2022
