Wasn't it located on Board Street at the railroad tracks? If so, my mother worked there in the early 50's. She would walk to Pennington Cafe next the Fly's food store and the No. 11 firehouse. All the corner of Baltimore and Broad Street. Ladas Pharmacy on the other corner is still there. I have mother's badge that she had to wear while working. She packaged cookies.
Yep,Malbis Bakry was next to GM&O RR tracks and odors that came from the bakery were heavenly.I us to work on the truck during summer and weekends delivering the goodies. I work for Mr White on his route. It was a fun job.As a paperboy use to get Sunday mornng breakfast at Penningtons.Drug Store back then was Albright&Wood and coner store was Greers. The old Nr.11 Fire Station also brings back good memories of old friends (Lott family) that worked there..
Malbis Bakery was located on Broad Street in the Oakdale Community. I lived 2 blocks from the bakery beside the old Roosevelt Theatre on Washington Avenue. I remember buying lady fingers there for my mother. The smell was heavenly. Broad street ran into Washington Avenue to a point. I lived there during the late 40's and early 50's. There was the Albright & Wood Drug Store with a soda fountain to die for, Greers Grocery and across the street was the old A&P Grocery Store. I remember walking by the fire station and listening for the sirens to go off so we could watch the firemen slide down the pole on the way to a fire. I went to Oakdale School and Oakdale Baptist Church and loved to go to Baltimore Park. It was a great place to live.
Oh wow I forgot about the Roosevelt theater. My dad use to take me there for the double feature on Saturdays. admittance was 10 cents! Of course once I was old enough I would go downtown to the Sanger theater! I went to Oakdale school also in first grade.
MY GRANDFATHER WORKED THERE 1955 TO 1967. SO IF HE WORKED THERE BETWEEN THEN MY GRANDFATHER WOULD KNOW. HE PACKAGED THE BREAD. IF YOU COULD GIVE ME A NAME I WOULD LOVE TO HELP.

Aw, this was an extremely nice post. Taking the time and actual effort to create a top notch article… but what can I say… I put things off a lot and never seem to get nearly anything done.
Biked from Selma and Broad st. Past Lane's Fruit Stand at Texas st. Delchamps to Malbis to theater I always though it was Washington Theater you all are right. Bike was stolen one time but found in the Tenn. Ditch next to Railroad. Went to Russell School 1950-1953 ? anyone remember Mrs. Johnson in 4th grade if you had her you would remember. Just rambling now. glad a friend told me about this web site.
Yes on Broad Street by railroad tracks. They made bread and bakery products sold in stores like Greers & Delchamps. Smiths bakery eventually bought them out. There was a retail bakery on the corner by the railroad track and also a restaurant. When I graduated from college in 1961, opened my insurance agency, my first Mutal Insurance Agents local chapter meeting was at Malbis Restaurant. Some member attending that night, Mal Roebuck of Thomas, King and Roebuck; Sam Steele of Sam Steele agency(now S S Steele home builders whose son runs the company); Paul Burkholder, Sr., whose grandson now runs the agency: Roland Fry and his partner Zelnicker(forget his first name) and some others. Not very many in local chapter because the big local agents were members of the Independent Insurance Agents Ass'c. which the two later merged. Eventually I wrote the insurance for all the Malbis Plantation holdings, bakery building, restaurant and motel at Spanish Fort, the historic Malbis Church, etc. Years after Malbis Bakery finally closed we leased the building to the owner of Alabama Furniture who put a mattress manufacturing plant in one end and bonded warehouse in end by railroad track. One day when they were spraying a flambable coating, an employee lit a cigarette and the fumes exploded. The ensuing fire completely destroyed the building. One million dollar claim paid. Metal building there now is the building that the re-built and later sold after going out of business.

We were on the "Bum" of course, knocking on doors of homes that were close to the tracks. In Delhi, we each succeeded in obtaining a sandwich or at least something to eat. Then we hopped on the Illinois Central and headed for Mobile, Alabama. Construction of the Hi-way tunnel under the bay was in progress at Mobile and we very foolishly thought we might get a job. What a mistaken thought that was. Anyway, I have always had a very good feeling toward Malbis Bakery of Mobile ever since. The Bakery gave us all the old bread and cakes we could eat. You can believe me, if the bread and cakes were old, we didn't notice it.
Going through old memorabilia at my Grandparent's home in Pascagoula and found a small box of letters and photos. After a closer look at the inside of the beautifully decorated box, I discovered that it was a Malbis Bakery Fruit Cake box with a detailed description of the cake from the 40's or 50's. The safe keeping of the letters and pictures along with the box were a beautiful reminder of good days gone by. I will cherish it forever!
